Mitsuhiro Hayakawa (早川 充洋 Hayakawa Mitsuhiro) is a second year power forward at Kaijō High. After the retirement of Yukio Kasamatsu and the other third years, Hayakawa was appointed captain.

Appearance[]

Hayakawa is a tall high school boy. He has short, light brown spiky hair, bushy eyebrows and a big mouth.

He wears the blue and white Kaijō High jersey with the number 10.

Personality[]

Hayakawa is a generally fiery person that experiences all of his emotions rather intensely. He does make much of an effort to to control his energy and approaches every situation with an often irritating level of zeal,[1] carrying himself with a general passion for life that is not limited to basketball. This sincerity applies to his positive and negative emotions alike, leading him to be easily excitable and just as easily moved in emotional situations. He has been seen crying after matches as well as being driven to tears by imagining the personal struggles of Yukio Kasamatsu.[2]. Despite this, Hayakawa has shown himself to be capable of restraining himself when truly necessary, as he was able to pull himself together from a loss after seeing his teammate's injury[3] and being ordered by his captain to hold his head high.[4]

His behavior most often draws the ire of his team in the time surrounding a match, as Hayakawa has a habit of dispelling his nerves through shouting and otherwise disruptive activities. He is not easily discouraged when in this state, even when punched directly in the face,[5] and will continue to maintain this level of passion throughout the rest of the game. This level of energy has been shown to also annoy his opponents[6] and has led him to be compared to Kōsuke Wakamatsu in terms of volume.

Additionally, Hayakawa's unyielding readiness has led him to be rather naïve. He is very easily convinced into doing different things and will approach everything with the same unbridled fervor, even if he is nervous or entirely clueless on how to begin.[7] Like the rest of his team, Hayakawa gets nervous around women and does not have the faintest clue on how to approach one. He is wholly fascinated by the idea of flirting and regards it with the same level of enthusiasm as he does most aspects of life. Due in part both to his lack of knowledge and the sheer respect he holds for his team, Hayakawa is eager to eager to absorb any and all information he can possible get from his teammates and has not once been shown doubting their words. He regards even their failures as valuable lessons to be learned.

Hayakawa struggles to pronounce his L and R sounds and instead incorrectly pronounces one as the other. This problem is worsened when he is excited about something, which when combined with his tendency to also speak quickly, makes him difficult to understand even to his own teammates. This speech pattern is typically translated into English with the use of brackets or parentheses to indicate which words or syllables are mispronounced. (ex. "Mo[ri]yama sure[ly] cannot [miss from] here, how [did] he [miss]?")

Story[]

Interhigh[]

Hayakawa first appears before Kaijō High's match against Tōō Academy in the locker room. He is already all fired up and is shouting that he will go full power. Yukio Kasamatsu punches him, in an effort to calm him down, but Hayakawa is still excited.[5] Kasamatsu asks Yoshitaka Moriyama to help him, but he is no good as well.

Hayakawa rebound Too

Hayakawa takes the rebound in the game against Tōō Academy

The match begins and when Ryō Sakurai shoots a three-pointer, Hayakawa goes for the rebound. But Sakurai scored and Tōō takes the lead. The match quickly progresses and the ball eventually ends up with Kasamatsu, who does a fade-away and shoots. The ball goes off the rim and Hayakawa goes for the rebound again. This time, he overpowers Kōsuke Wakamatsu and Yoshinori Susa and grabs the ball.[8] He passes to Moriyama, who scores a three-pointer. The first quarter ends with Kaijō in the lead.

At the beginning of the second quarter, an as usual overly fired up Hayakawa slaps his cheeks and gets in the mood for rebounding. When Wakamatsu comments on him being annoying, Shoichi Imayoshi says that they're actually pretty much alike. He later compliments Kasamatsu for stopping Daiki Aomine in his dunk.[9]

The first half eventually ends with Imayoshi's buzzer beater and Hayakawa is complaining that he couldn't catch the rebound. Moriyama, annoyed, replies that there wasn't even a rebound to catch.

The second half starts and Kaijō is lagging behind with 15 points. Kasamatsu takes a forced shot, it goes of the rim and Hayakawa is able to catch the rebound.[10] He passes to Kōji Kobori and he scores. The remaining time of the second half, Hayakawa is supporting Ryōta Kise with the rest of Kaijō. When they lose the match, Hayakawa leaves the court with his head held high.[4]

Pre-Winter Cup[]

Hayakawa is mad

Hayakawa is seen practicing with Kaijō High for the Winter Cup. When Ryōta Kise scores a dunk, he gets mad, yelling that he can't rebound if he does that (with his usual speaking problem).[11]

Hayakawa Rebound

Hayakawa rebounds

As a power forward, Hayakawa is very strong. He specializes in rebounds. His defense was also noted to be on a similar level to Seihō High's player Tomoki Tsugawa.[12]

Rebound[]

When Hayakawa gets fired up, his offensive rebound is very aggressive and very hard to stop. He hustles extremely hard for rebounds, making him especially skilled at boxing out opponents. This greatly limits his opponents' ability to grab rebounds, particularly those that fall near the basket where he is positioned. He is also able to dunk.

In the anime, Kiyoshi explains that Hayakawa is an explosive rebounder. He can reach the highest point first, thanks to his speed even if he jumps later than his opponents. He can use that time to gain a more favorable position.

Etymology[]

  • The name Mitsuhiro means "allot, fill" (充) (mitsu) and "ocean" (洋) (hiro).
  • Mitsuhiro's surname Hayakawa means "already, now, fast, early" (早) (haya) and "river, stream" (川) (kawa).
